Satellites on fire. Early wildfires prevention and detection

Why We Support This Project

Forest fires are becoming more widespread, burning at least twice as much tree cover today as they did two decades ago
— Global Forest Watch
Forest fires now result in nearly 6 million more hectares of tree cover loss per year than they did in 2001 — an area roughly the size of Croatia
— Global Forest Watch

How It Works

Satellites on fire provides a real-time wildfire detection system designed to minimize losses for organizations and individuals by delivering early alerts for fires occurring in their areas.

  • Primary SDG
Goal 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.

Goal 15: Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.

  • Target SDG Addressed
15.1. By 2020, ensure the conservation, restoration and sustainable use of terrestrial and inland freshwater ecosystems and their services, in particular forests, wetlands, mountains and drylands, in line with obligations under international agreements.

  • Type of Impact
    Mitigation.

  • Impact Measurement
    Millions of hectares monitored.

"We are monitoring 189,439,340 hectares for users registered in our alert system or currently using a trial. These individuals are safeguarding forest areas from potential fires with our help"
